was nominated for eleven Academy Awards and garnered Hitchcock his "first and only Best Picture Oscar" (Dirks, 2009). Hitchcock is acknowledged to be the quintessential master of suspense and his influence is difficult to overestimate in regards to suspenseful murder mysteries and horror. However, Rebecca is unlike Hitchcocks later work due to the heavy influence of producer David O. Selznick, who insisted the Hitchcock adhere precisely to the plot of the Daphne du Maurier novel from which the screenplay was adapted (Truffaut, 1985). Later in the American half of his career, after he has delivered one hit after another, Hitchcock takes liberties with the plot of Vertigo, changing it to fit his artistic vision (Truffaut, 1985). Nevertheless, despite the heavy hand of Selznick in the production, there are characteristic Hitchcock touches that heighten the suspense, such as how Hitchcock films the character is Mrs. Danvers, the housekeeper whose obsession with the first Mrs. De Winter, now deceased, is the reason for the tension in the narrative and leads directly to the films destructive conclusion. Hitchcock has Mrs. Danvers simply appear, seemingly out of nowhere. Francois Truffaut observes that "Mrs. Danvers was almost never seen walking and was rarely shown in motion" (Truffant, 1985, p. 129). Due to this feature, Mrs. Danvers seems almost supernatural in her ability to simply appear, starling the current Mrs. De Winter, who is played by Joan Fontaine. According to biographer Elise Mac Adams, Hitchcock would already have his vision for "every shot, special effect and performance" set in his own mind prior to arriving on the set and could be extremely antagonistic with anyone who did not share or endorse his vision (Mac Adams, 2005). His relationships with the actors were, to say the least, unorthodox, as he "unnerved" Joan Fontaine while filming Rebecca ...
