peoples history is one of constant betrayal. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian is Alexies first book for young people. This paper discusses the book and the illustrations
that play such an important part in the narrative. Discussion The story of Arnold "Junior" Spirit is a perfect story for young people, because it has so many elements that
appeal to them. Its the "fish out of water" story; the "unpopular kid who becomes popular" story; and the "follow your dream" story all rolled into one. But what could
become maudlin or predictable remains fresh and true in Alexies skillful hands, possibly because his protagonist is such an unlikely --- but likeable -- hero. Arnold "Junior" Spirit proves, over
the course of the novel, that he is aware of the problems caused by the extreme poverty on the reservation, and by the alcohol that is such a curse to
native Americans, but he overcomes both and does so with understanding. His father is a drunk but he doesnt condemn him, because he knows why he drinks. He is very
mature for his age. Junior is clearly modeled on Alexie himself: the author was born with water on the brain, underwent surgery as an infant and was given little chance
of survival. And heres what Junior says of himself: "I was born with water on the brain. OK, so thats not exactly true,. I was actually born with too much
cerebral spinal fluid inside my skull" (Alexie 1). He tells readers that he was "supposed to croak during the surgery" but obviously survived or he wouldnt be writing the book
(Alexie 2). Alexie could say the very same thing. But then Junior goes on to describe his other physical problems, all a result of the brain damage he suffered.
