States of America. As such he was clearly an important individual in American history. The following paper examines the life and work of Alexander Stephens. Alexander Stephens
"Alexander Hamilton Stephens was born on February 11, 1812 near Crawfordsville, Georgia. He attended local schools, and graduated from Franklin College in 1832 when
he was 20 years old" (NState, 2009). In the year 1834 he became a lawyer and started a private practice that was apparently short lived (NState, 2009). It was also
at this time, however, that he became active in politics (NState, 2009). He sided, in the beginning, with the Whig party "and
served in the Georgia state house from 1834 to 1841. As Stephens gained political momentum, he was elected to the Georgia state senate in 1842" (NState, 2009). He then went
on to be a United States Representative for the state of Georgia for 16 years (NState, 2009). During his time in politics, prior to the time of the Civil War,
he was involved in many issus. One author indicates how he was "A proponent of state sovereignty and a defender of slavery, Stephens favored the annexation of Texas, played a
leading role in the Compromise of 1850, and supported the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854" (The Impeachment of Andrew Johnson, 2009). When the Whig party ultimately disintegrated, by 1860, he became
a democrat in order to offer his support for Stephen Douglas who was running against Lincoln (NState, 2009). When Lincoln won
the election Stephens, along with many others, faced a future that was not necessarily one many sought as it related to the Southern states. Many in the South wanted to
