condition. There has long been the belief that alcoholism is far more than a simple problem, but that it is a disease, and also something that is clearly linked to
hereditary realities. There are some, however, that argue it is not a disease but rather a personality trait or a simple hereditary propensity for drinking too much. The following paper
examines, first off, facts about alcoholism, and then argues that alcoholism is a disease. The last section of the essay examines 3 possible solutions for alcoholics. Alcoholism: The
Facts According to one author, "Some 14 million Americans (approximately 1 in 13 adults) have a drinking problem, and about 8 million are
full-blown alcoholics" (Lender, 2001; 54). In general it seems that an alcoholic possesses four particular traits which are a real physical dependency on alcohol, a real craving for alcohol, the
loss of any control over their drinking habits, and a clear tolerance to alcohol in relationship to a building up of tolerance (Lender, 2001; 54). As mentioned previously, there
are many who argue that hereditary factors play an important role. Lender (2001) indicates that anywhere from 40 to 60% of alcoholics are that way because of genetics. Another author
indicates that, "Genetics and family history are increasingly thought to play a significant role in whether a person develops alcoholism. However, the mechanism of inheritance appears to be more complex
than simply inheriting a gene for alcoholism" (Crabbe; Goldman, 1992; 297). Clearly, when considering that genetics only involves a certain percentage of alcoholism problems, the condition of alcoholism is not
