impacts on family, impacts in the workplace are among the most disturbing. Alcoholism not only results in missed hours from work, it has a negative impact on performance and
relationships between the alcoholic and his or her coworkers and superiors and the alcoholic and customers. Even when an alcoholic doesnt directly interact with customers, the customer/provider relationship can
be negatively impacted. Because of lowered productivity and the stress between workers that occurs because of the alcoholic, a customers needs cannot be as efficiently and completely addressed as
they could in the absence of this stress. Economy as a whole is thus affected by alcoholism. Not only is the production of products adversely impacted, so too
is the customers tendency to purchase those products. One potential solution to these problems is employee assistance programs that are designed to abate alcoholism.
Alcoholisms impact to Canadian workplaces in general is concerning. Somre regions, however, are more representative of the problem than are others. Plouffe (2001) reports that in
Ontario, for example, an estimated ten to twelve percent of workers deal with some sort of substance abuse problem. Alcohol, of course, is one of the more prominent of
the substances being abused (Plouffe, 2001). This results in estimated losses of $9.2 billion in Ontario alone due to impeded workplace production and the health care and law enforcement
costs that go along with the problem (Plouffe, 2001). Alcoholism in the Canadian workplace, therefore, is a much bigger problem that
