Most researchers recognize, however, a clear correlation between alcoholism and both the propensity of an individual to commit a crime and the propensity of that individual to be rehabilitated for return to society once they have entered the criminal justice system. It can be contended that effective rehabilitation and prevention of criminal activity translates into effective address of the factors which are associated with criminal behavior. One of those factors is alcoholism. Criminal behavior most often results from a conflict between societal and individual values. Some of these conflicts can be culturally based, some may differ even between families. Criminals are often not swayed by the possibility of being caught or facing any type of social sanctions for their criminal activity. A better approach to reducing alcohol related crime, therefore would be one employing early intervention to dissuade a dependence on such substances as alcohol and effective rehabilitation once the problem develops. A common observation held by most students is that many criminals are characterized by some type of drug addiction (alcohol included) and they engage in criminal activity to support that addiction. Statistics support this observation. What students need to realize, however, is that several factors are at play in creating this relationship in the first place. Indeed, approximately forty percent of the variance in disruptive behavior patterns (one of several alcohol associated behaviors) can be linked to an individuals heredity (Rose, 1998).
