less than positive in light of the fact that they have an alcoholic for a parent. They are also individuals who surely experience many problems in their work. Many alcoholics
are often absent from work, calling in sick, or simply not even showing up for work. There are, of course, those alcoholics who seem to function adequately and thus their
work does not perhaps suffer, or does not suffer in any obvious manner. But, this particular paper focuses on the problem of alcoholism and absenteeism from work. The paper first
examines the condition of absenteeism related to alcoholism and then discusses what can be done to improve the situation. Absenteeism and Alcoholism "Alcoholism is, unfortunately, a common problem among
Americans. It has been estimated that approximately 12 million people in the United States suffer from alcohol dependence" and as such it is something that most definitely affects the work
industry of the nation (Clifford; Soares, 1990; 26). As is commonly understood, "This disorder carries considerable social consequences. Approximately 50 percent of motor vehicle accidents and 60 percent of murders
are alcohol related" (Clifford; Soares, 1990; 26). In addition, an alcoholics life expectancy is less than it is for most healthy individuals as it is reduced by 10 to 20
years. "Marital problems, spouse and child abuse, and family discord are frequently associated with a drinking problem" (Clifford; Soares, 1990; 26). Though these citations are from an article dated
