Yet, Gibson admits to his alcohol problem. When someone gets stopped by police and repeatedly has high levels of alcohol in his blood, it often means that they have a problem with alcohol. This was not the first time Gibson was involved in an incident with alcohol. In 1984, he was in an auto accident and he had been drinking ("Mel Gibson," 2006). Mel Gibson had in fact sought treatment through Alcoholics Anonymous quite some time ago ("Mel Gibson," 2006). Why this anecdote? Mel Gibson is fresh in the minds of people. How can a conservative film maker and religious man drink to excess and drive on the freeway? How can he display untoward and obnoxious behavior when that is not his normal demeanor? It is something that does not make sense. The behavior does not fit his usual personality. Further, he had a problem in the past. Was treatment ineffective? Does this mean that Alcoholics Anonymous does not work? Another reason for choosing this anecdote to explain the disease of alcoholism is to demonstrate that it is not easy to pinpoint or treat. It affects people from all walks of life. The bum on the street might not have started out that way, but ended up living for the bottle, as he never took steps to combat the addiction. And no one is surprised when people in Hollywood end up addicted to substances. It seems to go with the territory. Mel Gibson has fought the disease for some time.
