our modern world. Various methods have been used to address the problem. The most effective of any, however, has been Alcoholics Anonymous 12-Step Program. The 12-Step Program is the prototype after which many other programs addressing various other addictions have patterned themselves (Spiegel and Fewell, 2005). While no treatment program is one-hundred percent effective, Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) 12 Step Program is certainly exemplary. The intent of this paper is to describe the program and to weigh out its relative strengths and weaknesses. Alcoholic Anonymous (AA) is a self help group. Its success is attributable to the dedication of its members. Another particularly important aspect that has allowed AA to effectively address alcoholism is the anonymity it promises its members. A members problems stay in the group and are not broadcast into the outside world. The group functions on the basis of a carefully structured network which provides its members the support they need to fight their problem. New members are sponsored by a more experienced group member. The relationship that emerges, however, is anything but one-way. Indeed, providing an ear to another member helps long-term members stick to their own path of refraining from using alcohol. It reinforces their knowledge of just how damaging their addiction can be. The sponsored member, in turn, benefits from the experience of the older member. They come to realize that their struggle is not unique to them, that others have endured sometimes even harder challenges and still managed to stay sober.
