argues that college and university campuses should be dry. The argument makes sense when one understands that most of the university and college students are not of drinking age. But,
on the other hand, there are many who argue that making campuses dry will not address the dangers of alcohol and that if prohibition did not work in the 1920s
it certainly will not work now on the campuses of our youth. Bearing that in mind the following paper examines the pros and cons of dry campuses, arguing that dry
campuses should not be implemented across the nation, and that education and stronger enforcement on campuses is perhaps the key to eliminating the risks. Students and Drinking First
and foremost, while many people may think that drinking is a somewhat isolated problem in our colleges and universities, one author notes that, "The statistic is sobering: College students spend
$5.5 billion on alcohol each year - more than on books, soda, coffee, juice, and milk combined" (Baldauf). Another author indicates that, "A survey of 17,000 college students on 140
campuses found that binge drinking is a widespread problem with harmful effects on bingers and non-bingers" (Wechsler 20). Most college presidents, it seems, rank alcohol as the largest problem
on their campuses. "Widely used despite its illegality for most undergraduates, alcohol contributes to almost half of all motor vehicle fatalities--the leading cause of death among young Americans--and is associated
with unintentional injuries as well as unsafe sex, a growing threat with the spread of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases" (Wechsler 20). Now, while many may argue that
