I. SYMPTOMS Albinism - also called Hypopigmentation, Oculocutaneous albinism and Ocular albinism depending upon the extent of appearance - is identified by one or more of the following: *
absence of pigment from the hair, skin, or iris of eyes * patchy absence of pigment * lighter than normal skin and hair, complete albinism * rapid
eye movements (nystagmus) * strabismus (eyes not tracking properly) * photophobia (avoidance of light because of discomfort) * decreased visual acuity * functional blindness (Albinism)
II. CAUSES An autosomal recessive gene causes the lack of pigment. If two parents with normal pigmentation have an albino child, the
probability of the next child also having albinism is a one-eighth-probability chance. Albinism, which reflects a group of related conditions, is due to gene modification that ultimately cause melanin
production to be impair. This defect of melanin production, the property that provides pigment to the skin, consequently causes "partial or full absence of pigment from the skin, hair,
and eyes" (Albinism). Normally changed into melanin, the amino acid tyrosine has been noted as one of the primary reasons behind the presence of Albinism, inasmuch as one of
many potential defects in the bodys ability to metabolize tyrosine results in absence of pigment (Albinism). "For nearly all types of albinism both parents must carry an albinism gene
to have a child with albinism. Because the body has two sets of genes,a person may have normal pigmentation but carry the albinism gene. If a person has
one gene for normal pigmentation and one gene for albinism, he or she will have enough genetic information to make normal pigment. The albinism gene is recessive_it does not
