the European Union (EU) has pages and pages of directives on what constitutes chocolate or what constitutes sausage (Agriculture and Consumer Protection, n.d.). Packaging and labeling of products is much
more rigid in the EU for most products. There are also standards for pricing included in these directives. There is also the political environment to consider, which is different in
each country. Albertsons must know the ideology of the country. For example, socialism still rules China but capitalism is found in European countries. This is true despite the government opening
trade markets. There is a lack of stability in some countries, such as Rwanda and Liberia and in some African nations, there is a tendency towards centrism (Agriculture and Consumer
Protection, n.d.). Laws and regulations regarding prescription drugs are even more rigid. And, again, each country has their own set of regulations. In some countries, the legal and political
environments are such that the people are not able to get prescription drugs. Cohen-Kohler, Forman and Lipkus (2008) reported that there is a global drug gap in that developing countries
still do not have access to essential drugs. Two policies, the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) and bilateral and regional free trade agreements are precluding this
access to drugs (Cohen-Kohler, Forman and Lipkus, 2008). Another issue is the time it takes each countrys government to put a drug on the market. The slowest is Japan where
it will take years longer than in the U.S., i.e., the drug will be on the American market years before it is on the Japanese market. There is also the
issue of generic drugs and who gets them to market the fastest. India is ahead of most other countries in this realm. They have different patent laws than the U.S.,
