earth could continue. His views are identified with existentialism, the general philosophy that existence is the most important thing, and that are free agents and may make choices about
their behavior and beliefs. To embody his philosophy in a character, Camus gives us Meursault. He is very emotionally flat, having little reaction to his environment, and being
largely emotionally uninvolved with other people. He lives for the moment, doing things as they come along and seeing little relationship between them. For example, he goes to
his mothers funeral, and the next day, he goes out with a girlfriend to have a good time. He sees no reason why one should affect the other.
This is his pattern throughout the book. He does not appear to care deeply about anything or anyone, and subscribes to no religion or philosophy. He makes no
judgments, and so acts without any particular purpose. Thus the people around him neither understand him or appreciate him. And finally, they condemn him for it. The plot
of The Stranger is deceptively simple. Part One sets up the events which will lead to the crime for which Meursault will eventually be executed. Meursault, a shipping
clerk in Algiers, learns of his mothers death in a nursing home. He attends her funeral without any show of sorrow. He neither weeps nor mourns as the people
around him expect him to. Following the funeral, he returns to Algiers where he spends the weekend having a good time with Maria, who formerly worked at his office.
Again, there is no sign of any remorse shown for his mothers death. His emotions are flat. The following evening, Meursault becomes involved with his neighbor, Raymond Sintes,
