conditions, as the people find themselves trapped in a town they cannot leave. There is the inherent nature of human beings to look out for themselves, to be selfish, and
to lay blame on others. In essence, his work examines the human condition, good and bad, as people are faced with threatening realities. The following paper discusses the last two
thirds of the work, and then focuses on section four and five in the end as it relates to the need for basic human good in the worst of circumstances.
Albert Camus "The Plague" After the first part of the novel, once everyone is well aware that they are suffering from the plague, the novel begins to really
examine how the people of the town deal with the reality. They are slowly coming to a realization that they cannot escape the plague and they are quarantined in this
town, unable to leave. They become bitter and angry and accusing of others in the process, thinking they could somehow, unrealistically, be saved if they could leave the town that
is plagued. They long for everyone and everything they cannot have, things that exist outside their town, and they act as though their suffering is far more than anyone elses
on the outside world. In one particular quote the reader gets an understanding of this evolution of the people, as it begins, as one character, Tarrou, states: "I can
understand this sort of fervor and find it not displeasing. At the beginning of a pestilence and when it ends, theres always a propensity for rhetoric. In the first case,
habits have not yet been lost; in the second, theyre returning. It is in the thick of a calamity that one gets hardened to the truth-in other words, to silence"
