the fictional Will Hunting is much like Canadian social psychologist Albert Bandura. Will Huntings desire for knowledge is not to be teachers pet; instead, it is self-directed and motivated
"self-reward than through external reward" (Zimmerman & Schunk, 2003, p. 435). Will solved the mathematical problems on his own, without seeking to have his identity discovered by Professor Lambeau.
In so doing, he was intrinsically rather than extrinsically motivated. This reflects Banduras own approaches to learning. Attending a high school with few teachers, Bandura and his
fellow students had to direct their own educational paths in a way that went beyond the textbooks that were in short supply (Zimmerman & Schunk, 2003). This led Albert
Bandura towards his lifes work, to ponder how people learn and how this learning is influenced. Banduras theories on social learning, developmental psychology, and mentoring assisted educators like Professor
Lambeau and his college roommate and counselor Sean McGuire (Robin Williams) how to understand Will Huntings reticence to develop his gifts to their fullest extent and how to excite him
to the possibilities of self-efficacy. Bandura conceptualized the learning experience as "a socially embedded event" whereas social interactions play as large a role - if not larger in stimulating student
