March 11 and September 26, 1990 involving the Mohawk people, the Quebec Provincial Police and Canadian Armed Forces, as well as the historical background to the issues involved. This video
seriously challenged my personal conception of Canada, which derives from Canadas worldwide reputation as a country that supports human rights and social justice principles. First of all, the refusal
by the mayor of Oka to reconsider his decision to destroy a Mohawk cemetery in order to expand the golf course at his country club to eighteen holes and build
luxury condos was unethical, biased and narrow-minded. Then, even more disturbing, the video showed that the townspeople supported the mayor. One of the most disillusioning scenes for me was when
the director cut between news coverage of a government official telling the media that food trucks would be allowed through to provision the Native protestors and scenes that showed these
statements to be a lie. Rather than allowing the food and humanitarian supplies to be delivered, the authorities contacted a local farmer and had the food stored. The filmmakers interviewed
the farmer, conclusively showing that everything the government stipulated on this point was a lie. The historical background to the crisis, which was also covered in the video, shows
that lying is characteristic of how Europeans have consistently treated the Mohawks, as they have been lied to and cheated out of their land for centuries, beginning in the early
eighteenth century when the governor of New France gave the land in question to a Catholic seminary, presumably to hold the land in trust for use by the Mohawks. Lying,
deception and injustice have characterized relations between the Mohawk tribe and whatever white-controlled government has been in charge in Quebec and the video shows that this sorry legacy is ongoing
