turned out to be true, Bullock wondered what sort of gifts would a man such as Hitler have to possess to enable him to secure and then maintain such power
(9). Therefore, Bullock undertook the project of compiling and assimilating the material on Adolph Hitlers remarkable career. Bullock states, "My theme is not dictatorship, but the dictator, the personal
power of one man" (9). Logically, Bullock begins with Hitlers childhood and formative years. In Mein Kampf, Hitler attempted to portray his childhood as impoverished, but Bullock discovered no
real destitution. The picture that emerges from Bullocks account of Hitlers early years is that of a rather spoiled young man who had ordinary talents and an inflated sense of
his own self-importance. The third child of this fathers third marriage, his father was over fifty at the time of his birth, but his mother was under thirty (Bullock 25).
Hitlers mother had already lost two children before Hitlers birth. This may be the source of some of Hitlers self-centeredness as this may have caused his mother to dote on
him excessively. Dr. Eduard Humer, one of Hitlers early teachers, characterized Hitler, as a youth, in this manner: I can recall the gaunt, pale-faced youth pretty well. He
had definite talent, though in a narrow field. But he lacked self-discipline, being notoriously cantankerous, willful, arrogant and bad-tempered...Moreover he was lazy...he demanded of his fellow pupils their unqualified subservience,
