(Both of these subjects are vast and this paper can only touch on them in the most superficial way.) The Ideology of Terrorism What makes a terrorist? Why do people with presumably their entire lives ahead of them fly airplanes into buildings, blow themselves up at checkpoints, or kill themselves detonating car bombs? Its hard to define terrorism because the phenomenon is so complex. The FBI has a definition, and we might as well use theirs because its relatively straightforward. They say terrorism is "the unlawful use of force or violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives" (Flaherty, 2003, p. 29). There are many aspects of terrorism we need to explore. First, how we define terrorism usually depends on which side of the issue were on: there is a saying that "one mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter" (Flaherty, 2003, p. 29). According to the FBI definition, the people who rebelled against Britain and created the United States were terrorists (Flaherty, 2003, p. 30). Second, terrorism is not new, though the 9/11 attack suddenly made everyone aware of it (Flaherty, 2003, p. 30). Americans can be remarkably blind to reality, but terrorism is not confined to the Middle East; terrorist groups operating in the U.S. include the Ku Klux Klan, "rightist militias ... and militant antiabortion groups" (Flaherty, 2003, p. 30). Worldwide, terrorist groups include "Islamic Jihad, Basque separatists, and the Irish Republican Army" (Flaherty, 2003, p. 30).
