dry wit and a passionate advocate on behalf of the environment. He was an environmentalist long before it was "cool." His book Earth in the Balance is a very readable
work that explains why we must care for the planet or perish; in that book, he took on the first Bush administration. This time he is concerned with the fear-mongering
of the administration of the man author and activist Arundhati Roy calls "Bush the Lesser." (Democrats will get that joke; Republicans will be furious). That is part of the problem
that he addresses in his book: the parties are so polarized and there is so much anger in the U.S. today that any sort of compromise is impossible. Weve seen
this rigid adherence to political ideology since the election of Mr. Obama. For a year, the Republicans have done nothing but oppose anything the President and the Democrats propose. They
offer no alternative plans nor do they make any good-faith attempts to solve the problems and offer their solutions. Instead, they dig in and try to block all attempts at
reform, whether its health care, keeping the Internet free of corporate gatekeepers, improving education or protecting the environment, they offer nothing but roadblocks and they do so in spite of
Mr. Obamas determination to reach out to them. Of course, the same could no doubt be said about the Democrats when the Republicans are in power. When a member of
