Airports around the world share one similarity, they have a diversity of considerations that they must address in their master plans. Master
plans must encompass everything from air traffic control, to baggage handling, to garbage removal. Greenfield airports have to address all these requirements from scratch. Needless to say greenfield
developers rely heavily on the tried and true that is found in existing master plans for airports around the world. Likewise, the master plans of existing facilities are evolutionary
in their nature. They are modified as the need dictates. The Middle East serves as the location for one of the most
impressive projects currently underway. Phase One of Qatars New Doha International Airport (DIA), being constructed for the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority (QCAA), is scheduled to be completed by early
2009 (Al Bawaba, 2005). This facility is being constructed within 4 km of the existing facility but because it is a greenfield development all master plan requirements will have
to be addressed from scratch (SPG Media Limited, 2005). With an ultimate capacity of 50 million passengers a year this facility is massive (Al Bawaba, 2005). It will
occupy over 5,400 acres and feature eighty contact gates (Al Bawaba, 2005; SPG Media Limited, 2005). Nick WEbb, drector of Streamline Marketing emphasizes:
"With a total area equivalent to more than a third of the size of the city of Doha, the New Doha
International Airport is one of the most challenging and ambitious projects in the world at the moment" (Al Bawaba, 2005).
