of the increased capacity within the commercial aviation industry have been at a cost. Air travel, as with many other forms of travel, has an environmental cost. The costs have
been in terms of pollution, both noise and air pollution as well as the problem of hazardous or solid waste. The majority of attention over previous years has concentrated on
the level of noise that aircraft create, with restrictions placed on the times flights can take off and land, and controls on reducing noise levels. Yet this is not the
only damage, In a recent study in the US was conducted it has been estimated that when all of the pollutants form aircraft are considered their impact is felt by
70% of the US population were effected to a significant level (Saporito, 2001). The range of these pollutions is wide, therefore to consider the real impact a single pollutant can
be examined. It may be argued that this is not the most harmful for of pollution, and that the waste products that pollute the air are causing ling term harm,
this may be seen as independent and also in terms of reinforcing environmental damage that other pollutants are causes, such as the green house effect. The pollution caused in
the air by aircraft may be seen in different contexts. The local environment is impacted with a direct effect on air pollution reducing the quality of the air (CAA,
2002). There are many airports where studies have been conducted that have shown air quality around airports especially n the flight paths, is lower than other areas. One example is
that of San Francisco Airport (Shami and Kanafani, 1997). This was also a concern in the building of the El Toro Airport in Los Angeles (Reyes, 2001). The emission made
