diversity of impacts. These impacts vary in accordance not just with the specific pollutant itself but also in accordance with the specifics of the area that is if affecting. This is particularly true of air pollution. Air pollution affects our world on the large scale with its impact to the ozone layer and on the smaller scale as well. As its name suggests, the ozone layer is composed primarily of ozone. While ozone is toxic when it is in direct contact with plants or animals and even concerning when it builds up in the earths troposphere, in the stratosphere ozone serves the critical purpose of filtering out the more harmful of the suns rays. Interestingly, the ozone itself is formed as a function of the ultraviolet light splitting oxygen molecules (O2) into separate oxygen molecules (O). Those separate oxygen atoms then combine with the remaining oxygen molecules to form ozone (O3). This process is referred to as the ozone-oxygen cycle and has been a key component in allowing life to develop as it has in our world. It has shaped a protective filter over the entire earth yet that filter varies in its thickness in accordance with where in relation to the earth it is measured. The ozone layer is thinnest over the equator and thicker the further it is from the equator. Certain pollutants, however, not only severely threaten the ozone layer but have actually caused holes to form in it. Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and bromofluorocarbons, in particular, are to blame. The interact with the Ozone molecules and break them down. This destroys their ability to filter sunlight as they should and this, in turn, can have a dramatic impact on the earth. One ...
