Essay / Research Paper Abstract

3 pages in length. Considered to be one of the world's most polluted cities, Mexico City has long experienced the detrimental impact of its overwhelming air pollution problem. The most prominent pollutant throughout the city is automobile exhaust, which still to this day maintains high concentration levels of lead from before gasoline went lead-free. Sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide present two additional pollutants hanging in the air over Mexico City, as well, proving "very difficult to control and are still very worrisome from the point of view of the health effects…because they penetrate deeply into the lungs" (Air Pollution: Mexico City). This inability to dissipate such toxic substances is due to the city's proximity; a synergistic combination of high altitude and abundant sunlight create an "ideal environment for these dangerous compounds to accumulate and linger" (Air Pollution: Mexico City), ultimately proving extraordinarily damaging to the ozone. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide present two additional pollutants hanging in the air over Mexico City, as well, proving "very difficult to control and are still very worrisome from the point of view of the health effects" (Air Pollution: Mexico City) because of how they infiltrate deep inside the lungs (Brauer et al PG). This inability to dissipate such toxic substances is due to the citys proximity; a synergistic combination of high altitude and abundant sunlight create an "ideal environment for these dangerous compounds to accumulate and linger" (Air Pollution: Mexico City), ultimately proving extraordinarily damaging to the ozone. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), blame for the change in the earths climate, which is directly related to the Earths ozone depletion, can be placed squarely upon the shoulder of "human activity -- primarily the use of oil and fossil fuels" (IPS Correspondents PG). The chronic nature of air pollution in Mexico City is exacerbated by the high percentage of transportation fuel coupled with the environmental circumstances that prevent the elements from escaping the atmosphere. Allowed to hang thick in the sky and worsen year after year, Mexico City has become a caldron of air pollution. What, exactly, is clean air, and how is the Mexico City fighting to acquire it? If local, state and federal laws do not protect the environment and all its inhabitants from the hazards of smog, residents wonder what exactly will save them from such detrimental pollutants. Currently, scientists have been able to detect smog in considerably minute amounts, which indicates that while ...
