of modern society. In order for a mens movement to promote growth and development among men, it must have well-established goals and a thorough understanding of the societal conceptualization of
masculinity, that is, how this is a social construct, and not based on biology, as is popular perceived. Describing the perceived differences in masculine and feminine behavior in terms
of "gender," rather than considering these differences inherent to a specific sex, was popularized by feminist scholarship (Scott 1054). Masculinity, as is femininity, is a gender role pattern that is
associated with the biological sex differences, but is primarily developed through social interactions (Guowei, et al 96). In other words, the idea that men are silent, stern and macho is
socially constructed rather than based on biology. Masculinity in Western society is strongly linked with traditional male roles that include assertiveness, ambition and the achievement of status (Guowei, et al
96). In cultures that place a high value on masculine traits, the ethos that one should "live-to-work" is prevalent, which means that there is less emphasis on the nurturing
side of life for men trapped in these societal structures. There is abundant research evidence in healthcare literature that indicates that the "live-to-work" ethos is detrimental to physical, emotional and
mental well-being. Helping men to find a balance in life in which they feel free to pursue their best interests and achieve a healthy and emotionally fulfilling lifestyle should be
one of the principal goals of this movement. Theorists who have addressed the nature of patriarchy have focused on the inequality of men and women. According to Scott, "gender
inequality structures all other inequalities" (Scott 1058). Furthermore, gender has the power to affect areas of life that do not appear to be connected to it (Scott 1059). For example,
