character of Aibileen, who is loving, caring, insightful and maternal, is, by far, the most admirable person envisioned in this novel, which focuses on a journalistic expose, in which Skeeter
Phelan relates the stories and experiences of the black women whom the white families of Jackson, Mississippi employ to raise their children and clean their homes. Aibileen is important to
the book for a number of reasons, but principally she is pivotal due to her collaboration with Skeeter in writing her expose, but also because Stockett underscores the shallowness of
white behavior by contrasting it against the reactions and behavior of their black hired help and this is particularly true in regards to Aibileen For example, Mae Mobley Leefolt, the
two-year-old toddler that Aibileen looks after, manages to squirm lose and return to her pursuit of trying to get her mothers attention while she is on the telephone. The toddler
jerks the cord hard, pulling out of her mothers hand, and the woman reacts by hitting the child so hard on her bare legs that it leaves a red imprint
of her hand. She also jerks the babys arm repeatedly for emphasis as she tells Mae Mobley never to touch the phone again (Stockett 18). Aibileen picks up the crying
