growing older. As the millions of the "Baby Boom" generation move closer to retirement, numerous societal and psychological issues of aging in America are examined. Will aging be less "hard" on future generations, as well as the generation that will next enter the "golden years." The author underlines the movement toward a new perspective on aging in America and how the next retirement generation will fare. Larger political, social, and economic realities relating to the elderly of the future are examined. While most views of aging in America focus on the isolation or health problems of current elderly, this report looks at both this aged group and those groups (i.e. the Baby Boomers) that are to follow. Introduction "I always had things that had to be done, and I just kept doing them," says 73-year old Thomas Wyatt, a retired Army colonel whose career includes decorated service in World War II, Korea and Southeast Asia, plus a doctorate in sociology. "The weeks and years and months went by, and I never thought of myself as changing." Wyatt spends his days studying religion, counseling rape victims, housekeeping, and caring for his 12 year old daughter (Agrest 1997). Why Colonel Wyatt (retired) provides an example of self-actualized retirement years, the aging process is far more complicated than simply keeping at the "things that had to be done." According to the U.S. Census Bureau (1997), 1 in 8 Americans is 65 years of age or older. By the year 2020, 1 in 6 Americans will have passed the 65-year milestone; by 2030, 1 in 5.
