While senility was once thought to be an inevitable fact of aging, we now know that that is not the case (Connell, Boise, Stuckey, Holmes, 2004). Too often, however, we have the tendency to self diagnose, to proclaim that the minor signs of aging that we encounter are relicts of serious conditions like Alzheimers Disease or dementia (Connell, Boise, Stuckey, Holmes, 2004). In reality, while these diseases do exist, they are relatively uncommon. Our tendency to self-diagnose is, in fact, potentially deleterious to our self concept, to our lifestyle and to our drive to live. While many elderly individuals suffer some form of memory loss, that memory loss is not only most often minor but it can also be prevented! Given the potential adverse impacts of our understanding of senility, therefore, it is critical that we educate ourselves about the truths of cognitive function in the elderly! This is even more important when we heed the advice offered by Corliss, Lemonick, Park, August, and Berryman (2004) who contend that one of the most important factors in allowing the elderly to stay mentally alert is: "a sense of belonging and purpose" In other words, if we treat the elderly as if the are an integral part of our community and give them a purpose in that community, their chances of suffering from senility are greatly reduced!
