its toll. Many adults, as they age, find that there is a definite decline in processing speed (Depp & Jeste, 2010). Yet, areas like general knowledge and vocabulary stay the
same or may even increase (Depp & Jeste, 2010). This may be their greatest asset. Older people acquire knowledge. They often know more than people who are younger than them.
There are things that people can do to improve their cognitive abilities. Many say that using the mind is key to good health
as people age. In other words, people may want to do crossword puzzles, read books, and use their mind for mathematics even in their seventies and beyond. By letting the
mind relax, and not using it, one is allowing it to fall into a situation where it is underutilized. Although compensation strategies for the changes that are inevitable have been
suggested, scripts and schemata for example have not been adequately researched (Depp & Jeste, 2010). In effect, there is some knowledge on the subject, but how much control one has
over changes in cognitive function is debatable. Not enough attention has been given to the subject. Memory changes over time, but also the memories that people recall is attached
to certain phases and stages of life. Some people have difficulty recalling childhood events. However, studies show that people have greatest recall of events that occurred during their teenage years
and as young adults, in addition to very recent memories (Fitzgerald, 1999, Rubin, 2002; Rybash, 1999 as cited in Sigelman & Rider, 2011). When examining a graph of memory recall
as it respects 70 year olds, they recall events seemingly from their teens and middle twenties and then again when they reach about the age of 65 (Sigelman & Rider,
