Africa and the United States represent two of many places worldwide where the elderly are considered a worthless subset of humanity. Getting old in America is not a socially accepted occurrence. Contempt and disrespect stem from the aspect of aging against ones will, with people looking upon the elderly as slow, incapable, broken down and virtually worthless individuals. The notion of ageism, the negative attitude associated with getting old, is apparent in myriad ways, with its roots likely planted in Greek philosophy where old age was akin to weakness. Contemporary American society has successfully carried on this tradition of impertinence in many ways, not the least of which by forcibly pushing the elderly out of the workforce in a blatant display of irreverence. "Ageism in Corporate America has become more overt. Although Americans have long been obsessed with youth, there has been blatant hostility and contempt for older workers in recent years" (Zemke, 1999, p. 6). The media are no less responsible for perpetuating this socially accepted attitude, inasmuch movies, books and other forms of broadcast rarely portray the elderly as anything other than doddering, unreliable nincompoops. That they have lived lives full of valuable experiences and know a great deal about many things does not come into play; rather, all that is considered is their outward appearance, which clearly boasts graying hair, false teeth, wrinkled skin and a general essence of slowing down.
