Unfortunately, discrimination and prejudice are very much a component of American society. While we typically conceptualize such things as targeting race and gender, there are other forms of discrimination and prejudice that are just as real. Age discrimination is one of the more prominent examples. Young people in American society are often very prejudiced towards older people. Ironically, the generation that once distinguished itself, in part, with phrases like "dont trust anyone over thirty" is now itself the target of age discrimination! There are many examples that can be used to support these contentions. These range from examples found in the workplace to those found elder abuse. Three specific arguments can be made in this regard. These are: 1. Our population is progressively growing older and this means that there is more potential for discrimination and prejudice, 2. one frequent reflection of this is found in the workplace, and 3. the worse reflection, however, is in elder abuse. One of the first things that we must recognize when considering age discrimination is that societal changes have made this discrimination a more and more common phenomenon over the past few generations. Our society is, after all, becoming skewed towards progressively older demographics. ...
