However, despite these models of positive progress, North America fails miserably at addressing a fundamental component of any civilized society: respecting and appreciating the elderly. The reality of ageism - defined as "any attitude, action, or institutional structure which subordinates a person or group because of age or any assignment of roles in society purely on the basis of age" (Traxler, 1980, p. 4) - is a prevalent and ongoing social ill throughout North American societies this is manifested in individual conduct, media influence and workforce limitations. AMERICAN ATTITUDES The extent to which ageism is steeped within the negative boundaries of stereotype is both grand and far-reaching; that youth is a highly revered commodity in North America
speaks to one of the primary reasons why "ageism attitudes and stereotypes serve to insulate the young and middle-aged from the ambivalence they feel towards the elderly" (Woolf, 1998).
Getting old is not a socially accepted occurrence. In America, contempt and disrespect stem from the aspect of aging against ones will, with people looking upon the elderly as
slow, incapable, broken down and virtually worthless individuals. The notion of ageism is apparent in myriad ways, with its roots likely planted in Greek philosophy where old age was
akin to weakness. Contemporary society has successfully carried on this tradition of impertinence by forcibly pushing the elderly out of the workforce, pushing intolerant attitudes and carrying on as
