of Discovery, from approximately 1450 to 1650, is also known as the Age of Reconnaissance and the Age of Expansion. It refers to the migration of Europeans to other regions
in the world that resulted in colonization. These regions included North America, South America, the Pacific Islands, Japan, India, China and Africa. It was a time of domination and oppression,
in many cases, as established nations worked to expand their territory as well as influence in the world. The effort for expansion was fueled by the strength of the central
government in England, Spain and France. Although many historians attribute the beginning of this Age to Columbus (Johansen, 1982), the first country that moved toward overseas expansion was, in fact,
Portugal. This began with Prince Henry the Navigator who planned exploration voyages in the early 15th century, prior to Columbus journeys (Moore, 2001). The Portuguese colonized Brazil. They
then established naval bases as well as trading posts in Africa, India, the Middle East, East Asia and the East Indies. These relationships also led to an exchange of cultural
and social mores, each influencing the other (Rosa, 1998). Looking at the factors that were involved with the Age of Discovery/Expansion provides an insight to the culture of the populous:
* Religious - Conversion of non-believers - this was a major factor during this era. Religious leaders were anxious to spread Christianity among all New World inhabitants. * Economic -
Italian merchants were looking for new markets. There was a concerted interest in the spice trade, which was located in the far east. * Curiosity - A strong interest
