the past two centuries Britain has been depicted as a place where proper emotions and etiquette are the highest goal in many ways. We can see some of the culture
of the British through reading novels, and novels that are essentially very different. The following paper examines the social values of the English prior to WWII as presented in Agatha
Christies "The ABC Murders" and the depiction of social values after the war as seen in Kazuo Ishiguros "The Remains of the Day." The paper finishes with a comparison and
contrast of the two. Agatha Christie In Agatha Christies novel we have the detective known as Poirot who is a very worldly and distinguished man. He is
sophisticated and has a very deep appreciation for drama as well as romance. He is very keen on his appearance and prides himself in always looking good, which includes his
obsession with his mustache which he spends a great deal of time on. He is, overall, an incredibly overly confident man who feels he knows what is right in all
circumstances. And, while he is very good at his job, he is also incredibly arrogant as seen in his response to Donald Frasers question of who he is, indicating he
is not the police: "I am better than the police, said Poirot" (Christie NA). There is a very powerful sense of romance concerning Poirot as well. He loves the
notion of romance and is incredibly sensitive towards women. Women seem to notice this and are often drawn to him for his sensitivity. In this and in the previously pointed
out traits, the pre-war Englishman is a man of arrogance, appearance, intelligence, integrity, and sensitivity. And, he prides himself on all these things. In addition, one can note that he
