that because Agamemnon killed their daughter as a sacrifice for the gods that she was justified in killing her husband. However, if we look more closely it may well be
that Agamemnon was the victim and Clytemnestra the true villain. The following paper examines this perspective. Agamemnon In the beginning of this story we hear how Agamemnon has
killed his daughter as a sacrifice to the gods so that he and his men can survive the seas and receive good winds to bring them home. However, at the
same time "find Clytemnestra alienated from her husband and secretly befriended with his ancestral enemy, Aigisthos. The air is heavy and throbbing with hate; hate which is evil but has
its due cause" (Preface to Agamemnon). In this preface we note that Agamemnon has done as he was told by a prophet. He was following the will of the
gods, or what he was told was the will of the gods. Clytemnestra, however, was only stewing in her anger and resentment. By todays standards we would, of course, find
that Agamemnon was very guilty and that he could not pin murder on the words of a prophet or the desires of the gods. In todays view children are sacred
and should never be murdered. But, in the days that this work was written we are supposed to understand that a womans place was not one of power or choice
and as such a female child, though loved, was not as important as a mans life and certainly not more important than the desires or laws of the gods. As
such Agamemnon was doing the right thing by his gods and his social world. Clytemnestra, on the other hand, was showing every possible trait of women that gave women a
