the United States has been a nation. This is evidenced in the number of states that have the death penalty: "As of January 1998, 38 states and the federal government
have capital punishment laws in effect" (University of Alaska, Anchorage, 2007). There have always been those who believe in an "eye for an eye" in that they believe anyone who
murders a person should be killed. There have also always been people who believe that "two wrongs do not make a right" indicating that killing a murderer is not the
civilized or humane way to handle such problems. The following paper argues that the death penalty should not be part of our social or legal system, that the death penalty
is wrong. Against the Death Penalty It should perhaps be noted first off that while there are many statistics involving the right or wrong of the death penalty,
in terms of its deterrence benefits, or lack of benefits, the point is that the death penalty is very much a moral and ethical concern. A person can offer as
much information, regarding statistics and legalities, and the issue will always come down to whether or not it is right, not whether it is proven right. A person cannot prove
a moral or an ethic is right for it is a very personal reality. As such one can only persuade another to their side with the understanding that there is
not proof. At the same time, there are statistics that, for those who need them, indicate that the death penalty has not proven to be a deterrent to criminals.
