But, at the same time, being that it is connected, or against, religion leads it to be in a position where many would argue it should not be celebration in Americas schools. The following paper argues against the celebration of Halloween in schools. Against the Celebration of Halloween in Schools In looking at one of the reasons why Halloween should not be celebrated it is perhaps important to look at the history of Halloween, and thus look at its religious origins. While many people associate Halloween with "evil" religions such as the worship of the Devil, wherein they claim that Halloween is the birthday of Satan, the truth is that it is, first, a Celtic holiday. It was celebrated as something akin to the Mexican peoples celebration of the day of the dead. When Christianity began to work on the pagan Celtic people, bringing them to Christianity, they incorporated a day to allow for the Celtic people to still retain their day of the dead, while also becoming Christian. As such November 1st is considered to be All Saints Day in the Catholic faith and the celebration begins the night before: "People continued to celebrate All Hallows Eve as a time of the wandering dead, but the supernatural beings were now thought to be evil" (Santino, 1982). In this case, whatever the focus, the celebration of Halloween can be seen as either Christian or pagan and in both cases it is religious and thus cannot, legally, be celebrated in schools, or at least in public schools.
