First published in the May 21, 1996 edition of the Washington Post, Bennetts article was inspired by the pro-gay marriage views of Andrew Sullivan. Highly conservative, Bennetts interest in the
American family is reflected throughout his history. He is active in the National Endowment of the Humanities (once serving as chairman), was the Secretary of Education in the Reagan
administration, and serves as co-director of the advocacy organization Empower America. Bennett also served as President George H.W. Bushs drug czar. Most importantly, perhaps, Bennett has written
extensively on American cultural problems. Not only is he the author of the well-received "The Book of Virtues and The Broken Hearth: Reversing the Moral Collapse of the
American Family", he was the senior editor of the prestigious journal "National Review". The intent of this paper is to support Bennetts contentions, to support the thesis that gay
marriage would indeed serve more as a negative impact on society than a positive impact. Bennett makes many valid point in his opposition of gay marriage. Making such a
radical exception to the traditional constraints of marriage would introduce problems in regulating even more aspects of those traditional constraints. Bennett asks how could we possibly prevent incestual marriages,
for example, or polygamy. If we allow gays to marry whey couldnt they marry their own same-sex sibling or if they are bi-sexual why couldnt they marry not one partner
but two partners? To do so would certainly be interpreted as a denial of sexuality just as prohibiting gay marriage is interpreted as being. Bennett insists that
