condoned. Discussion The various positions that people take regarding gay marriage are illustrated in a run-down of the presidential hopefuls. Dennis Kucinich supports "just about every gay right imaginable" and
says that same-sex marriage "is a fundamental civil right" (Dowd, 2007, p. 36). John McCain opposed the inclusion of LGBT persons in hate-crimes laws and "maintains that heterosexual marriage deserves
special status (Dowd, 2007). He says he would allow gay marriage, but at the same time wants to preserve the sanctity of male/female unions (Dowd, 2007). Tom Vilsack, governor of
Iowa is squarely on the fence; he supports "extending bullying and discrimination protections to LGBT students," but also thinks commitment should be honored, because "theres too little of it, but
I dont think we necessarily have to redefine marriage to do it" (Dowd, 2007, p. 36). Mitt Romney, who is the former governor of Massachusetts, is solidly anti-gay; he says
that if theres no difference between heterosexual couples marrying and gay couples marrying, then "it means our schools and other institutions are going to have to indicate that there is
no difference whatsoever" (Dowd, 2007, p. 36). Hillary Rodham Clinton was opposed to gay marriage but now considers herself "evolved" and wouldnt necessarily vote against it (Dowd, 2007). She thinks
