should be abandoned. Rationale - Against Corporal Punishment Corporal punishment in schools is used as a disciplinary measure, and "there remains a strong undercurrent of opinion in the United States
favoring corporal punishment in schools, and such advocates include various fundamental churches, the National Association of Secondary School Principals, and the American Federation of Teachers" (Greydanus et al.). A
poll conducted in 1985 revealed that 47% of the American population and 60% of school officials approved of the practice (Greydanus, et al.) In addition, the poll also found
that adults, both parents and teachers, "who were physically punished as children are more supportive of this than those who were not" (Greydanus, et al.). In general, it seems
that the belief in corporal punishment derives either from the old wheeze, "Spare the rod and spoil the child" or from parents who were hit themselves and figured if they
survived it, their children will too. Neither of these is a good reason for using physical violence; in fact, there dont seem to be any good reasons for its
use. The Society for Adolescent Medicine has concluded that "corporal punishment is an ineffective method of discipline and has major deleterious effects on the physical and mental health of those
inflicted" (Greydanus, et al.) Further, there is "no clear evidence that such punishment effectuates more discipline or better control in the classroom," the reason given for using it (Greydanus,
et al.) Using corporal punishment doesnt increase the students respect for the teacher, give the teacher more control of the class, or "enhance character development," and it appears that
corporal punishment is not always a last resort but is used routinely (Greydanus, et al). This calls into question the difficulty of differentiating discipline form abuse. And finally, studies
