February as a tribute to Black history during Black History Month, reminding us all that interest in Black history in America and interest in things African did not begin with
the Black Power movement of the 1960s. Haleys account of his family history is fictionalized, of course, but it is based on one solid truth: his ancestor kidnapped
from Africa to be sold into slavery in America lost everything that people could take away from him, but he doggedly clung to the African tradition of preserving oral history
for future generations. The strength of his commitment to the tradition is evident in the fact that his 20th century descendant learned of the story of Kunte Kinte from
his own parents. This is only one aspect of the complexity of Africana studies, of course. The interdisciplinary field of study also
includes the history of Africa as a continent and as separate nations; cultural relations within and between those nations; and the study of the entire diaspora, not only that which
was destined for America. As such, Africana study has significance for academia, the community and business. Academia Practical, hands-on knowledge can be
gained in a variety of ways, but most knowledge of that type is obvious and straightforward. One of the enduring purposes of higher education is to encourage critical thinking
on all levels, ranging from the individual to the global community. One of the truths of history is that it is the victor
