who is 9 and a girl who is 15. All three mothers have been in London since the early 1990s. Comments about the families will be included in different sections
of the paper and will relate to how that area has affected them, e.g., having English as a second language. The United Kingdom has experienced explosive immigration in the last
decade or so (Wikipedia, 2006). In the decade between the 1991 Census and the 2001 Censure, the population increased by 2.2 million, half, or 1.1 million were born outside the
country Wikipedia, 2006). In terms of the total population, 7.53 percent were born abroad Wikipedia, 2006). Immigrants are attracted more to London and the South East region than to other
parts of the country (Wikipedia, 2006). There were 1.7 million foreign-born residents in London, that was more than 25 percent of the citys total population at the time (Wikipedia,
2006). That number has increased in the five years since the census. Both immigrants and the British experience culture changes. In fact, England is not at all what it was
even two decades ago and London has changed completely. It is a challenge for both immigrants and natives to accommodate each other as the culture of the country changes dramatically.
One author reported that England, and particularly those cities with large ethnic minority populations, like London, are experiencing what they call white flight (Wikipedia, 2006). It is what has happened
