that illustrates the conditions the African Americans lived in during slavery and Reconstruction. It is a work that illustrates how and why many slaves survived through so much turmoil. As such it is clearly a work that addresses African cosmology, the basic beliefs and characteristics of the African people, and thus also the African American people. The following paper first examines the notion of African cosmology, defining some of the complex subject, and then discusses how Morrisons "Beloved" addresses African cosmology, arguing that much of Morrisons views on the cosmology of the African people is that which is based on a sense of strength and resilience in the face of slavery, a resilience that is also highlighted by the supernatural. African Cosmology African cosmology is a very complex subject or term to be defined. It essentially sums up their perspectives and their beliefs concerning gods or God or the universe. Considering that there are many many tribes, in the past and present, that are of African descent truly defining the overall African cosmology is all but impossible. But, for the most part we can argue that there is a sense of the supernatural in the African cosmology. One author indicates that, "Africans experience God -- Nana -- as the good parent, the grandparent. Some say he is father; others say she is mother. But the sentiment is the same: Nana is the source of loving-kindness and protection" (Oduyoye). For the most part the African cosmology is not dissimilar to other cosmologies in that it is patriarchal in nature.
