Africans did not invent systems of writing as did the civilizations in Mesopotamia and Egypt. There is a distinct problem with this concept of African civilization, which is that
it simply isnt true, and isas a matter of facta complete reversal of the truth. Yet this concept was believed for generations and still lingers in the public mind.
An examination of history reveals that the invention of this concept by Europeans was absolutely necessary in order to rationalize European religious beliefs and their treatment of Africans. Between
the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, Europeans developed a profitable capitalistic enterprise, the enslavement of human beings. The slave trade made many of them personally wealthy and greatly enriched their countries.
While it is true that slavery was not new to human experience, what was unique about this development was that it was carried out by Europeans groups who professed to
be deeply religious Christians (Morris 72). When Europeans first came in contact with the ancient civilizations of West Africa, they were enormously impressed by the grandeur and organization
of these cultures. In addition to considerable wealth, these cultures had great cities, scholarship and learning with government administrations which were complex (Morris 72). There is little evidence today that
these civilizations even existed and many people still find it hard to believe the evidence that does still exist. The task of maintaining a belief in African inferiority took
some interesting European mental gymnastics. For one thing, the documentation of African civilizations in the manuscripts of classical Greek and Roman writers and historians had to be ignored. It
became the custom to regard the Homeric and the classical notices and traditions concerning the antiquity and grandeur of Ethiopian civilization as being hardly more than bits of poetic extravaganza
