that the problems of the past are behind society, as the nation moves forward in a racially unbiased condition. The truth, however, is that African Americans are still suffering from
racist actions and racist ideals. The following paper examines racism towards African Americans in the nation. The paper briefly discusses the history of racism and then discusses racism and society,
racism and education, and racism and health care. Racism: History Racism perhaps began with the institution of slavery in the nation,
a condition wherein the African people were brought to the nation and treated as though they were not human. They were oppressed in the most horrific of manners, and they
were clearly seen as creatures that were less than the whites, setting the stage for racism that would exist in the nation. When they were freed they still suffered greatly
at the hands of the majority; the white people of the nation. The Ku Klux Klan grew greatly in power following the freeing of the African Americans and this clearly
established an undercurrent of racist ideals in the nation. From the time of the end of the Civil War and the freeing
of the African Americans, up until just before the Second World War, the United States was also apparently guilty of trying to engage in genocide towards the African Americans. One
critic, a reviewer of a book on the topic, asks, "Ethnic cleansing could never happen in the United States. Right?" But, according to a book, "Sundown Towns: A Hidden Dimension
