an African American and a slave. Twains novel takes place in the time of slavery in the United States and as such only portrays the life of the African American
in slavery. Twains novel does not discuss aspects of the lives of African Americans in the North, for the story is an adventure that simply involves one African American. Clearly,
if one looks at the position of Jim in Twains novel one can see that the African American people are in a far better social and economic position today as
slavery does not exist in the nation. The following paper first examines the position of Jim in Twains novel and then examines the lives of African Americans today. The paper
finishes with a comparison. African Americans: Huck Finn There is not a great deal of information in the novel about
how Jim was treated and what his daily life was necessarily like under the bonds of slavery. This is because the majority of the story takes place while Huck and
Jim are on the run, for one reason or another. Prior to their running away together, however, there is a description of how Jim is seen as one of the
wisest and smartest of his people, respected by his people. Huck tells us that, "Strange niggers would stand with their mouths open and look him all over, same as if
he was a wonder. Niggers is always talking about witches in the dark by the kitchen fire; but whenever one was talking and letting on to know all about
such things" (Twain Chapter II). In this excerpt we see that Jim is respected and feared perhaps by his people, his fellow slaves, but that Huck also envisions that
