and for the most part the existence of the African Americans during times of slavery is one of the biggest reasons this nation saw its only civil war. The following
paper examines the political involvement of the African American, discussing the cost of such involvement since the days when African Americans were given the right to vote. African Americans
and Politics Following the Civil War there were many changes as the African Americans began to take a more obvious place in the political structure of the United States. They
were not granted the rights due them, but their presence and their freedom clearly altered the face of the United States as they were no longer unpaid labor. However, they
were politically put into a position where becoming truly free was nothing more than a dream as they were put in positions of debt, in locations where they were forced
to sharecrop with little hope for getting ahead. While they were free, the political body clearly made laws and political plays that restricted the amount of freedom the African Americans
actually possessed. After too many decades of this reality the Civil Rights came along and forced the nation to pay closer attention. This Civil Rights Movement truly cost a great
deal. Men and women were killed, political tensions rose and battled, equality was argued and great men were killed because of their political voice. The cost was great in the
1960s with the Civil Rights movement and the costs cannot even begin to be accurately or adequately detailed. Children were abused, churches destroyed, families disrupted and people killed. However, great
