The fields of social work and sociology have been integrally
tied throughout history. Each deals with the mechanisms of human interaction. From a very broad perspective, sociologists try to understand the mechanisms of those interactions and social workers
try to intervene to correct dysfunctions in human interaction. African Americans have played important roles in each of these fields. There have, in fact, been numerous African Americans
that could be considered pioneers in these fields. Many have placed a particular emphasis on the study of race and ethnic relations.
One of the most noteworthy African American sociologists that jumps immediately to mind is W.E.B. Dubois. DuBois is noted for his ability to related to his subject on both
a scientific and a personal level. When we examine Dubois "Souls of Black Folks", a work first published in 1903, we find a beautiful insight into the heart of
the African American people. This book would eventually be judged not only as a classic but as a work which had a greater effect on African Americans than practically
any other book published up until that time. William H. Ferris writes in 1913:
"Du Bois The Souls of Black Folks came to me as a bolt from the blue. It was the rebellion of a fearless soul, the protest of a noble
