African American generals as it relates to ethical research. African American Generals The topic of African American generals, as it involves research and history, is a complex topic
that can be examined, or researched, from many perspectives. For example, one could focus on the social elements of the positions and the individuals, or one could focus on the
realities associated with attempting to obtain such a position in the military. One could research what, in the past, it took for an African American to become a general and
compare it to what it took for a white individual to become a general. That could be also a topic of research that could be applied to todays military in
order to understand if there are any differences today, or to illustrate how far society has come in simply accepting that African Americans can be anything a white individual could
be. In establishing such a research it is important to understand the ethics involved in such research. Three very important elements of the ethics of research involve informed consent,
anonymity and confidentiality. In any research that is expected to be effective, informative, and beneficial in any way it is imperative that subjects be informed of the research in all
aspects of the study. Those involved must obtain "informed consent from individuals who are research subjects using language that is reasonably understandable and clear, informing research subjects of the purpose
of the research, risks related to research, the subjects right to refuse or withdrawn consent, and the time frame covered by the consent" (Aspirational Code of Ethical Principles, 2007). They
