what society was attempting to resolve. ABOUT APARTHEID In the case of the Union of South Africa under apartheid, it is evident exactly what was happening. While there
were a few lynchings, they were not the norm and should not be considered as such. Society had evolved at that point and as explained in Ethnic Power Mobilized
it showed itself to be thinking more individually, even though it still begot violencei. In the book Ethnic Power Mobilizedii the reader understands that during apartheid the society
was more complex than during the late 1800s and early 1900s. People were thinking for themselves and taking matters into their own hands. In the words of Durkheim,
they were "becoming an organic society instead of a mechanical one, growing instead of acting robotically"iii. Durkheim would seem to have been well ahead of his time in his
depiction of society and the role it plays in the behavior of the individual. The collective conscience is obviously an ideal that was operative in the time of the
lynchings during the 1800s and 1900s. Rather than seeing a group mentality or a societal mentality, at this point we see two groups split on their thoughts as
to what is right. This is more seemingly a case of the lower class thinking differently than the upper class white people. Are we to attest that
this is what is meant as to society being specialized or non-specialized, we can only wonder if this type of theory is not totally correct. Or would one emphasize
