ACTION When affirmative action was first introduced, its primary purpose was to give minority groups the same -- or better -- chance as their white counterparts. What that meant
for the academic world was if two entrance candidates were equally qualified on all levels, yet one was a minority and the other was white, the minority would automatically be
accepted. There are times, however, when an underqualified minority wins out over a qualified white male just to meet the necessary quota. The real life application
of affirmative action is anything but what it was originally designed to address. Double standards are prevalent throughout educational, employment and economic institutions as minority groups have been instrumental
in taking advantage of a system that was supposed to offset racial discrimination, not make it worse from the other direction. Critics of affirmative action contend that the entire program
was misguided from the start. It can readily be argued that the very groups targeted to benefit from affirmative action are no longer the ones that need protection; instead,
the direction has changed so much that white males are now looked upon as minorities in many educational, economic and employment areas. Studies have shown that just because a
minority has gained entrance into university over that of a white applicant, the opportunity for educational advancement is not fully appreciated. Some critics contend that affirmative action has had
a crippling effect upon minority groups because of its obvious message of inferiority. It has, in all actuality, described minorities as being unable to fend for themselves in the
